A match made in theatrical heaven – from park stages in London to rural America – few things embody summer quite like Shakespeare Under the Stars. Seasonal outdoor performances of The Bard’s work have become a warm weather tradition across the globe, and this annual Boise festival is no different. Every June through September, Shakespeare’s plays grace the stage alongside contemporary classics, just 25 minutes from Hotel 43. Surrounded by mountain vistas and lush greenery, the state-of-the-art Idaho Shakespeare Festival Amphitheater seats 770 in the heart of a vibrant habitat preserve, transporting theater-goers to another place and time.
King Lear as You’ve Never Seen It
This season’s drama from The Bard is one of the best shows in years, a hair-raising rendition of King Lear’s descent into madness. Poisoned by power, the tale follows its namesake ruler (brilliantly played by festival mainstay, Aled Davies) as he tears his kingdom apart with jealousy, familial rage, and a wanton ego. As if Davies’ wrenching performance weren’t enough, everything from the set to the costumes deteriorates around the king as his world crumbles.
